Mastering the Queen of Hearts Card Game: A Comprehensive Guide for Players

If looking to keep your card-playing activities fresh and exciting with a variant to traditional Hearts, Queen of Hearts stands out as a very fun option that you can learn very quickly.

It's another trick-taking game played with a standard deck of 52 cards and (usually) four players. Here's all you need to know about playing and scoring.

How to Play Queen of Hearts: Tricks and Hands

Queen of Hearts is a simple trick-taking game. To start, each player is dealt 13 cards (if four players) face down.

The lead player (usually the person clockwise to the dealer) will then start the first trick by playing any card in the center of the table. Moving clockwise, each of the other players must then play a card. If they can play a card from the lead suit, they must prioritize this over other suits. If they do not have a card from the lead suit, the player may play any of the cards they hold.

  • Example 1: Player 1 plays the 7 of Diamonds; P2 plays 6 of Diamonds; P3 plays 4 of Diamonds, Player 4 plays 2 of Diamonds. Player 1 takes the trick.
  • Example 2: Player 1 plays 10 of Spades, P2 plays Jack of Hearts, P3 Plays King of Spades, P4 Plays 7 of Hearts. Player 3 takes the trick.

Whoever plays the highest card from the lead suit will then collect all four cards from the trick before leading the next. In total, there will be 13 tricks per hand.

How to Play Queen of Hearts: Scoring

Scoring is often the most difficult part of trick-taking games, which is one of the reasons many people love Queen of Hearts as a precursor to traditional hearts or themed Hearts. The aim of the game is to collect points (rather than avoid them like in standard Hearts) until you reach the predetermined milestone, which is most commonly 100 points.

To score points in a hand, you need to win a trick that has a Queen. A player receives 10 points for each of the Queen of Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds or 20 points for the Queen of Hearts. So, each hand has a total of 50 points on offer.

Each hand should only take five minutes. So, a full game up to 100 points should take 10-20 minutes depending on how the scoring develops.

How to Win at Queen of Hearts

Some luck is useful in Queen of Hearts, and it certainly helps to be dealt a high volume of Queens, Kings, and Aces. However, it is still a game of strategy. Here are some top tips to help you succeed:

  • Remember that taking non-scoring tricks doesn't affect the scoring, but leading may give you an advantage depending on your cards.
  • If you are guaranteed to win a trick when playing a Queen, play it.
  • Lead with lower cards where possible and save your Kings and Aces to steal Queens.
  • Create a void so that you are missing one suit of cards as early as possible.
  • When a player is close to 100 points, be prepared to help others win scoring tricks in order to stop the current leader from winning.

Playing Queen of Hearts and traditional Hearts will also develop skills and strategies that can be used in both.
